Well, in all fairness, my job is the primary source of my discontent, and I know this, and I'm actively seeking to remedy that.
Anyway, here's a little microscene that points towards a macroproblem:
Many of the people at my job are self-proclaimed Christians. So many are that they feel comfortable about including Christian prayers at company lunches, etc. As Christians, they've made sure to ostracize the few Jews, and completely alienate the three gay people I know about (there might be more, it's a big company). So, when I found out that two rather popular employees are having an affair behind the backs of their respective spouses, I found it a little too typically hypocritical. Yeah, two women in a committed, monogamous relationship is an affront to all that's decent, while people cheating on their spouses (rather new spouses at that: one has been married less than two years, while the other has 2 kids under the age of 5) is all wink-and-a-nod acceptable. Unbelievable, ain't it?
The macroproblem is this: Christianity has become the "public religion" in America. It's the default social setting. Whatever the group mores are, they may sanctify such patterns by slapping the name "christian" on it. I believe this is why Jesus went off on the moneychangers in the temple. Not because commerce is bad, but because making your God into a convenience store clerk is.
See, I have no problem with people who have a faith. If you are humble, and devout, I'll excuse those moments when your faith conflicts with my life. But, if there's no real faith behind it, and it's simply a social club you've decided to bulwark as religion, I'll have no respect for it.
See, in my eyes, God is more pleased by people who have love, faith and charity in mind, than by those with lust, arrogance and self-interest in action. But, hey, I'm just the idiot in the corner.sigh.
